The Beast that inhabits us.
The polarization of politics that Mexico is experiencing is not framed in a debate of ideas that seek to solve the state of the art of Mexican life in society, but rather in a fierce struggle for public power, the absence of a civilized and rational debate like this. This is attested to, and staged by the characters representing the political groups, alluding to contempt, misogyny, classism, single-issue rhetoric of corruption, one-person reference, sensationalism, and discrimination, and even the invitation to fix the political confrontation with blows (with blows), and never ever appeal to common sense, the weight of truth, or the evidence that intelligence can perceive.
This historical period in Mexico is absent of transcendental men (generically speaking) who take into their hands the construction of an epistemology that guarantees the realization of a country project that puts an end to the public crisis that Mexico is experiencing. The lack of relief from the political class that has held the fate of Mexico in its hands for more than 100 years is presented as a visible threat that could swallow up the prospect of a 4th peaceful transformation towards an efficient and intelligent political system.
And what to say about political praxis, everyone in uniform exercising power (political, economic and media) at convenience, without embarrassment the public coffers continue to be used to put the partisan seal, depending on the case of the controlled territory, in the strategies to maintain the power or to obtain it there everyone is equal, the absence of a democratic culture established in the psyche of the Mexican is located in a time to come, and the ghost of the Western narrative of illustrated mirages refuses to die and seems to gain new strength in our latitudes.
The pretext remains the same, "save Mexico!" of the communist/masonic/satanic ogre (1), or “save Mexico!” of the corrupt stateless person (a crocodile calling a hippopotamus a big mouth), without embarrassment they move in empty speeches, outdated revolutionary poses, globalizing modernisms in ruins, rudimentary obsolete neoliberalisms, without realizing that they live in a worn-out and battered world, in a visceral confrontation for a new conquest of lost territories.
Mexico as always, arriving late to the lights of the Enlightenment, lives modernity from an amazing postmodernity and without new concepts to shine. In the struggle for power, attention is not paid to form or content, but to the guts, to pure power, and the future becomes more uncertain and tortuous, because we all know that going back to the past is a closed option unless we want to. be suicidal, and that the future from voluntarism and messianism is a risky bet because we now know that the gods are not eternal, and the demigods are more like those of Greek mythology, humans too human as Nietzsche would say.
I already commented on it some time ago in a text titled "if and only if the pyramid of public power is overturned, there will be 4 transformation and the vindication of the Mexican revolution" (2), now I see far away even the revival of the Mexican revolution at least Well, after the "hunger games" have been unleashed, which you could paraphrase as "the race for public power", the well-intentioned and distinguished President Obrador, with all his will to change the reality of inequality in Mexico, seems to have anticipated the end of his six-year term, the ambition for power can outweigh the country's social project defended by President Obrador, and, on the other side, the pathetic opposition leaders who "not even smoothies make one", huddle among themselves like penguins to protect themselves from glacial storms, and these to encourage themselves that they are the option of Mexico, without caring that their future prospects slide to compete with Sheimbaum, the one implicitly chosen by Obrador just for being the The only one that does not come from the PRI hosts, from a screaming hysteric to a pathetic self-exiled pseudo "politically persecuted" who awaits a triumphant return from self-exile (his protection from possible judicial prosecution for his pranks).
But the real problem in Mexico is, on the one hand, how to make political parties free themselves from their past and their masters, and help consolidate the democratic transition, and on the other hand, how to make a revolution actually happen (Q4 ) peaceful that overturns the pyramid of public power, and makes the exercise of a real and effective democracy.
Although it is true, the monothematic diagnosis is correct, the degeneration of the res publica is corruption, and restoring the lost functionality of the Mexican state and its institutions is a main issue for the government of the republic and for all Mexicans, because simply public power was and is traversed by private group interests, it is also true, that this is not enough to talk about a 4T and much less a vindication of the lost ends of the Mexican revolution, since it is needed, as I have Said, that there is a true democracy where the people rule, and the ruler rules by obeying.
I know this is not easy, because we are talking about reversing a global political system, where the pyramid of public power is vertical and omnipresent in all public affairs, and world history was built based on these processes of political globalization and economic, although, mainly, the coronavirus health crisis, the economic and geopolitical crisis, and we add the crisis of sustainability and sustainability that the world energy crisis entails, and the war in Ukraine, are forcing us to rethink this conceptual framework of the public and the concept of man.
So let's think that the attempt to talk about a transformation (revolution) in Mexico has to do with analyzing and responding to how the degeneration of politics and the public sphere was possible, for which reason simplicity does not help us, talking about culture , psychology, nature, etc., this is of no use to us if we cannot contextualize what has happened, what is happening, and where we are going and what we must do so that "the new" is better than "the old".
I am convinced that Mexico is another, and that we must start from concepts that we did not take into account, and that are vital, demography, psychology, culture, etc., then the conceptual framework that we built to order life in society, which It has to do with the Enlightenment and all that romantic period of the rational man, ideas imported from old Europe, and later, the revolt of ideas that we must give to shuffle other ideas of what is truly Mexican, the contrast between the global and the local.
Sometimes I see that the public debate is Byzantine and dogmatic, because it always falls into a self-referencing, appealing to a fallacy of authority, in this case, to that imported conceptual framework and embodied in our Constitution, our secular bible, and it is intended to think that it is only a matter of updating it and complying with it, but I believe that therein lies the contemporary problem, and it is not exclusive to Mexico, the pyramid of power is global.
Therefore, the look and the avant-garde actions have to point to the opposite of the pyramid of global power, to local power, to community power.
The degradation of the State and its institutions have to do with the lack of joint responsibility, which is what has been lacking, the culture of corruption and simulation has and is happening due to the lack of joint responsibility and a critical culture of the governed, for which It is important to take into account that the responsibility of society does not end with suffrage (voting), it is necessary to co-govern, and for this, it is necessary to turn the pyramid of presidential power and build channels of effective citizen participation.
We cannot return to frivolity and the culture of simulation, but for this, citizen participation is essential, we must be the overseers of politics and public power.
Although now the verticality of public power prevents any form of control and transparency, we have to overturn the pyramid of public power, and empower the instruments and "figures of citizen participation", and not with self-legitimizing formalisms of centrality, but by supporting those figures in the administration, planning and deliberation of the budgetary planning of public policies, in such a way that the temptation to abuse public power, is delimited from the bases, that with the investment of the pyramid of public power they will be the apex . Obtaining money and personal benefits sums up the abuse of public power, and we call that corruption, which unfortunately we still experience.
The current political system continues to be played and looking for who controls who, and creating figures without the ability to limit the abuse of public power, in other words, we continue to play that democracy exists and that power belongs to the people, and this The game is not exclusive to Mexico, democracy has served to legalize but not to legitimize, flipping the pyramid of public power is a way of making transparent by limiting the individual use of the budget, of course accompanied, as is the case for Mexico, by a deep administrative reform crossed by the professionalization and establishment of the career civil service.
But overturning the pyramid of global public power requires going beyond limiting the ways in which the system breaks down and encourages corruption, it has to do with empowering the local, the municipality, the community, there must be a revolution of real representation , taking into account demography and psychology.
Unfortunately, one is the theorization of current politics, political and democratic culture, and the other is the reality of the public and politics, and there we find ourselves in a blind alley, in an eternal Sisyphus that all day hoping we climb the All our happiness, joy and certainty slope down the mountain, and in the morning we see that everything has collapsed.
Perhaps we continue to be trapped and delighted with our image in the mirror, faithfully believing that we are different from the laws that order nature and the cosmos, and that we can continue to believe that we are in the best of all possible worlds.
Some letters written here go against the pessimism that our conduct in public affairs entails, and believe that it is possible to tame the beast that inhabits us.
